The Texas DMV CDL Air Brakes Knowledge Test is one of two major tests that must be passed if you want a commercial driver’s license (CDL) with the allowance to drive air brake-equipped vehicles. Without a passing score, the “L” restriction will remain on your CDL, making it illegal to operate any CMV equipped with air brakes. That restriction immediately closes the door to the majority of trucking jobs, as most CMVs are equipped with air brakes. Failing the exam also triggers a one-day waiting period and a retesting fee before making another attempt. Our Texas CDL Air Brakes Practice Tests are designed to help you pass on your first try, getting you on the road faster.
The official Air Brakes Knowledge Test is a multiple-choice exam requiring a minimum score of 80% to pass. The content includes system components, pressure and leak test procedures, safe braking methods, and malfunction prevention. You’ll also need to pass the Skills Test in an air brake-equipped vehicle if you want the air brake restriction removed. During that exam, you’ll conduct inspections, check air pressure systems, detect leaks, and demonstrate safe brake operation in an air brake-equipped vehicle.

Our Texas CDL Air Brakes Practice Tests simulate the official exam, which has been shown to present tricky wording, distractors, double negatives, and common word traps that can confuse test-takers. Our practice tests familiarize you with these tactics so you’re ready before you even walk into the test site. Our practice tests deliver immediate AI-driven feedback and an interactive CDL Manual to strengthen retention and speed learning. Furthermore, our Challenge Bank repeatedly presents questions until you answer them correctly, ensuring you have each question aced before moving on. Texas is one of the largest freight and logistics hubs in the nation, serving as a link between the U.S. and Mexico. The state’s major interstates include I-10, I-20, I-35, and I-45, which make it possible for industries like agriculture, manufacturing, oil and gas, technology, and tourism to flourish. Major employers that often hire air brake-qualified drivers include ExxonMobil, Greyhound, Halliburton, JBS, Pilgrim’s Pride, Texas Instruments, and Texas Trails. Even full-size buses use air brakes, making the qualification necessary for many passenger and municipal transport careers. With the “L” restriction in place, your job prospects diminish dramatically.
