The Mother of Presidents, the Old Dominion, the Mother of States. Virginia offers a lot of opportunities for CDL holders, including transporting students to and from school or school events in any of its 134 school districts. The path to legally transporting students begins with earning the School Bus "S" endorsement and the Passenger "P" endorsement (along with meeting other federal, state, and local requirements). You’ll also need to pass a Skills Test in a school bus. That’s not all. To drive most large school buses, you’ll need to pass the Air Brakes Knowledge Test and complete your Skills Test in a bus equipped with air brakes. (More on the P endorsement and Air Brakes later.) If all this sounds a bit daunting, don’t worry. Our content experts have crafted a series of state-specific practice tests to guide you along the way, beginning with our Virginia CDL School Bus "S" Endorsement Knowledge Practice Tests.
There are a lot of topics covered on the official School Bus endorsement exam. The exam focuses heavily on student safety, especially during loading and unloading, which has been consistently identified as the most dangerous phase of school bus operation. You are expected to maintain constant awareness through skilled mirror usage, blind-spot management, and continual tracking of students as they approach, board, ride, and exit the bus. You must demonstrate mastery of controlled stops, proper bus securement, and hazard prevention, including ensuring that no student is ever placed at risk by door operation or railings. That means you need to be cognizant of their bookbag straps and clothing potentially getting caught on bus gear. You must also be prepared to handle railroad crossings, evacuate the bus if necessary, and maintain discipline among students. The Commonwealth places particular emphasis on post-trip inspections, including confirming the bus is secure, free of damage, and empty of passengers at the conclusion of each trip. Our practice tests cover all of this tested material, while leaving out the unnecessary fluff you’ll find elsewhere. The School Bus endorsement is only one of the qualifications you must have to transport students. You will also need to pass the Passenger endorsement exam, and in many cases, the Air Brakes knowledge test, since the majority of full-size school buses rely on air brake systems.
