In the Evergreen State, you can make a difference in the lives of young people by adding endorsements to your CDL and becoming a school bus driver. You’ll need to obtain both the Passenger "P" endorsement and the School Bus "S" endorsement, for which you must pass a Skills Test in a school bus. Most large school buses are equipped with air brakes, so you may also want to pass the Air Brakes Exam to start removing that restriction from your CDL. (More information on the P endorsement and air brakes qualification is below.)
Let’s start with passing the Washington DOL CDL School Bus "S" Endorsement Knowledge Exam. Meeting this requirement (with its minimum score of 80%) is not an easy task. There are many topics that require a deep conceptual mastery, and outdated study guides and static pdfs are not effective at preparing you for this level of understanding. Our Washington CDL School Bus "S" Endorsement Knowledge Practice Tests are scientifically designed to speed learning and enhance retention. With features including an interactive AI-powered response system and a state-of-the-art Challenge Bank™ of questions, our practice tests help ensure you pass your official exam on the first attempt. You’ll also receive an end-of-session review that highlights any topics needing further study. Our content experts have gone to great lengths to save you time and mental bandwidth. Once you ace this practice test, try another from our series: https://driving-tests.org/washington/wa-cdl-school-bus-practice-test/.
The material you’ll need to learn is directly related to the safety protocols in place for transporting children. You are expected to master the use of mirrors to monitor the "danger zones" around the bus, especially as students are loading and unloading. You must understand how to position the bus safely, control traffic situations, and handle limited-visibility areas. You must maintain constant awareness of student movement, not just drive the bus. You will also be tested on protocols that ensure no students are left on board after a route, as well as how to manage emergency evacuations, railroad crossings, and hazard prevention.
As mentioned earlier, you must also pass the state’s Passenger "P" Endorsement Exam. We have practice tests for that as well: https://driving-tests.org/washington/wa-cdl-passenger-vehicles-practice-test/. To drive larger air brake-equipped buses, you’ll need to pass the Air Brakes Test. Check out our preparatory resources here: https://driving-tests.org/washington/wa-cdl-air-brake-practice-test/.
