Are you considering a career change? The opportunity you’ve been looking for might be achieved with a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), which opens the door to commercial driving in West Virginia. Whether you intend to drive buses on scenic mountain roads or deliver cargo across rural communities, you must go through the licensing process. The first step is to obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). You must have at least two years of licensed driving experience. You must also provide identification documents, pay the license fees, pass a vision test, and obtain a score of 80% or higher on the official CDL General Knowledge (permit) exam. If you intend to operate in non-excepted commerce, you must also submit a current medical certificate.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires all aspiring commercial drivers to complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) before they can schedule and take the CDL skill tests. You must get your ELDT training from a provider listed in FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry (TPR).
