Want to unlock higher-paying trucking jobs? Earning a Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement on your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is one of the fastest ways to do that. This credential allows you to legally transport explosives, petroleum products, industrial chemicals, radioactive materials, and biohazards. Without the endorsement, an entire sector of opportunities is off-limits. The U.S. government has created a multi-tiered process for obtaining the HazMat certification for the handling of these materials. This lengthier process is designed to keep drivers, the populace, and the environment safe.
To qualify for a Hazmat endorsement, you must be at least 21 years old and meet three major requirements. First, you’ll need to make certain that all Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements have been fulfilled. Next, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) fingerprinting and background check. The results of your submission can take weeks to arrive, so we encourage you to start early and then use the waiting period for the third and final hurdle: the DMV HazMat Knowledge Test. This test contains 30 questions, and you’ll need to answer at least 24 correctly (80%) to pass (West Virginia CDL Handbook 2025).
To help make sure you pass the official test on your first attempt, we have created a series of West Virginia HazMat Practice Tests. These practice tests deal directly with the material you will need to know for the official test, instead of your having to sift through pages of irrelevant information. We also provide instant feedback on all practice test responses, allowing you to learn as you go instead of waiting until the end for assessments. Our experts have curated our practice test design to speed the learning process and vastly increase retention. Once you have this practice test mastered, check out another one here: https://driving-tests.org/west-virginia/wv-cdl-hazmat-practice-test/.
In the Mountain State. Hazmat-certified drivers are needed across multiple industries, including chemical manufacturing, petroleum and natural gas, and mining/coal processing. Some of the major companies in the state include Jacobs Petroleum Products, Central Transport, and SAIA LTL Freight. In addition to the HazMat endorsement, you should also check out our other West Virginia categories of practice tests, like Air Brakes Practice Tests and Combination Vehicle Practice Tests.
Once all ELDT requirements have been completed, you’ve received your TSA clearance, and you feel prepared for the official Knowledge Test, bring your paperwork and fees to the DMV, pass the exam, and step ahead of the competition as you open new career opportunities.
