First-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants

Nicknamed "Almost Heaven," the Mountain State is a great place to explore different career options for your commercial driver’s license (CDL), including transporting students to and from school and special events. If you’ve already obtained a CDL, you’ve done most of the work, but there are still important requirements that must be met before driving a school bus. You must obtain the School Bus "S" and Passenger "P" endorsements on your CDL, which requires you to pass the behind-the-wheel Skills Test in a school bus. Let’s dive into the School Bus Endorsement first, and we’ll provide links below to help with the other requirements.

The endorsement knowledge exams require a minimum passing score of 80% and contain a significant amount of material that must be conceptually understood. This means that outdated study guides and static pdfs are less useful. Luckily, you’ve come to the perfect place for the most advanced West Virginia CDL School Bus "S" Endorsement Knowledge Practice Tests available. Our interactive, AI-powered practice tests fill the gap by providing features formatted like the official exam to prepare you conceptually.

Even if you hold both endorsements but still have a commercial learner’s permit (CLP), you are not permitted to transport passengers. You must be fully licensed, with all federal, state, and local requirements met. You are expected to demonstrate mastery of loading and unloading procedures and how to use mirrors effectively, maintain awareness of student movement, and position the bus safely at all stops. Emergency procedures, railroad crossing protocols, and post-trip inspections are also essential responsibilities. In addition to the knowledge and skills tests, you must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) and meet any medical and background checks as required by state and local law. This is especially relevant for school bus drivers entrusted with our children.

In addition to the AI features mentioned earlier, our content experts have created a Challenge Bank™ that recycles missed questions until all are answered correctly. This attention to detail and expectation of excellence helps ensure you pass the official knowledge exam upon first testing, avoiding delays and potential added fees. Once you have mastered this practice test, try another: https://driving-tests.org/west-virginia/wv-cdl-school-bus-practice-test/.

As mentioned above, you’ll also need to pass the state’s Passenger Endorsement "P" Exam before transporting students. We have practice tests for that as well: https://driving-tests.org/west-virginia/wv-cdl-passenger-vehicles-practice-test/. Also, since most larger school buses are equipped with air brakes, you may want to prepare for the state’s Air Brakes Test, which is required to remove that restriction from your CDL: https://driving-tests.org/west-virginia/wv-cdl-air-brake-practice-test/.
