Are you ready to become more competitive among other commercial drivers, potentially earning more income in the process? Adding the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is one of the most effective ways to boost your earning potential and expand marketability in Wyoming. With this endorsement, you qualify to haul loads that the U.S. government has deemed hazardous and set yourself apart from non-endorsed drivers, who have no access to this sector.
In the Equality State, common hazardous materials include oil, natural gas, ammonium nitrate, propane, and agricultural chemicals. Major companies such as Halliburton in Casper, Sinclair Oil Corporation, and Black Hills Corporation in Cheyenne depend on drivers who hold this endorsement. This small list represents just a few in a much larger list of opportunities and pay raises awaiting you once endorsed.
To receive the endorsement, the U.S. government requires three major steps. First, you must ensure that all Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements have been met. Next, you’ll need to pass a fingerprinting and background check conducted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). While you wait for what is often several weeks for these results, you will want to study for the third and final step: passing the DOT HazMat Knowledge Test. This test covers federal regulations, handling and packaging requirements, quantity limits, and transportation configurations for hazardous cargo. Wyoming’s test includes 30 questions, and you’ll need to score at least 80% to pass (Wyoming CDL Handbook 2025). Failing the test can result in delays and added fees, which we can certainly help you avoid.
