Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) is a federal requirement set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for new commercial drivers. It is mandatory for individuals:
- Obtaining a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) for the first time.
- Upgrading from a Class B CDL to a Class A CDL.
- Seeking a school bus (S), passenger (P), or hazardous materials (H) endorsement for the first time.

- Effective Date: Regulations took effect on February 7, 2022.
- Training Providers: Training must be from an FMCSA-approved provider, listed on the Training Provider Registry.
