Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements. In Alabama, as in the rest of the country, driving combination vehicles requires a Class A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License). This license allows you to operate semi-trucks and tractor-trailers. Whether you’re transporting automotive parts between assembly plants or moving agricultural products from field to market, you will play a vital role in keeping freight moving across Alabama and beyond.
Before earning your Class A CDL, you must pass a specialized knowledge test on the safe operation of combination vehicles. The official combination vehicles knowledge test includes 20 multiple-choice questions based on Section 6 (Combination Vehicles) of the official Commercial Driver License Manual (Alabama CDL Handbook 2025). You must also pass the official general knowledge test, which will evaluate your understanding of general commercial driving theory.
Passing your theory exams will grant you a CLP (Commercial Learner’s Permit), which you may use to practice driving under the supervision of a full Class A CDL holder. During this time, all applicants are required to complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT). This federal requirement was introduced in 2022 and applies to all U.S. states, including Alabama. You must hold your CLP for at least 14 days before you can schedule and take your CDL skills tests.
This Free Alabama CDL Combination Practice Test is one of several we offer. It closely reflects the content and format of the official combination vehicles knowledge exam. All 25 questions have multiple answer choices, but only one is correct. Since we have omitted any timer from this practice test, we highly advise against rushing. Please read every question twice and carefully consider each answer option before you select one.
With unlimited attempts, you can test this practice test as many times as you need until you’re regularly scoring 90% or higher. Keep track of your scores and watch your performance naturally improve over time. You can also check out our Free Alabama CDL Permit Practice Test to evaluate your knowledge of general commercial driving theory.
Whether it takes you several weeks or a few months, with consistency and perseverance, you will build the knowledge and confidence to pass your theory exams on your first attempt.
