- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 AL commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for September 2025
Getting your Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in Alabama starts with meeting the basic requirements. You must be at least 18 to drive within the state and 21 to drive across state lines, carry passengers, or haul hazardous materials. You will also have to provide identification documents, pay the licensing fees, and pass a vision screening. If you plan to be engaged in non-excepted commerce, you must pass a medical exam administered by a certified medical examiner. This examiner must be listed on the FMCSA’s National Registry.
The first step in the licensing process is to get your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). To do this, you must pass the official general knowledge written exam at a DMV location. To remove the L restriction (which prohibits you from using air brakes) from your CDL, you must also pass the official air brakes knowledge test. A score of 80% or higher is necessary to pass each exam. Once issued, your CLP will let you practice driving a Class B commercial vehicle under supervision, but you must hold it for at least 14 days before you can schedule and take the CDL skills tests. During this time, you must also complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a provider listed in the Training Provider Registry (TPR).
The official Alabama Commercial Driver License Manual (Alabama CDL Handbook 2025) will be your primary study resource during your learning phase. This handbook describes the various aspects of commercial driving theory in detail and helps build the foundation for your dream career.
Our Alabama CDL Class B Practice Test can be used to evaluate your knowledge before exam day. You get nonstop access and unlimited attempts to train as often as your schedule allows. Whether traveling abroad or resting in the comfort of your home, you can access this practice test on any compatible device. All 50 questions have multiple answer choices, but only one is correct. Please finish each practice session at your own pace and avoid rushing.
Commercial driving cannot be mastered overnight. While our practice tests can significantly boost your learning potential, you must use them regularly and consistently to see noticeable progress.
