AK CDL Air Brakes Practice Test 4 2025
9 min
In Alaska, earning your CDL without the air brakes qualification places an “L” restriction on your license, meaning you can’t legally operate commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) equipped with air brakes. Considering that most semi-trucks, charter buses, and heavy haulers across the Last Frontier are equipped with air brakes, passing this test is a must. The Alaska DMV requires the passing of a written knowledge exam and a hands-on skills test to qualify for the restriction removal.
On Alaska’s roads like the icy Dalton Highway and the steep Seward and Glenn Highways, reliable braking systems are a necessity. Across Alaska’s major sectors, including construction, freight logistics, mining, oil and gas, and tourism, air-brake-qualified drivers are in constant demand. Companies like Alaska Freight Lines and Carlile Transportation Systems require air brake-endorsed drivers. From moving machinery to transporting passengers in Anchorage, Fairbanks, or Juneau, air brakes are standard equipment, making this qualification essential for a professional driving career.

The Alaska DMV Air Brakes Test is divided into two parts: the Knowledge Test and the Skills Test. The Knowledge Test is a multiple-choice exam covering air brake system components, safe operation and maintenance, emergency braking procedures, and pre-trip inspections of air brake systems. You must score at least 80% to pass. The Skills Test must be conducted in a vehicle equipped with a full air brake system. On this test, you’ll demonstrate air pressure checks and leak testing, proper use of service, parking, and emergency brakes, and identification of air system components during inspection. Failing to pass either part will result in the “L” restriction, which disqualifies you from driving vehicles with air brakes until you retest successfully. These retests can include mandatory waiting periods as well as additional fees, all avoidable by using our expert-crafted practice tests!
Our CDL Air Brakes Practice Tests are modeled directly after the official Alaska DMV test. You’ll receive instant feedback on each response to help strengthen your understanding and retention. Our experts have filtered out the fluff you often find in other study materials, which saves you time and mental bandwidth and helps ensure you pass the official test on your first attempt.
