Starting a career as a commercial driver involves meeting specific requirements. To get a Class A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License), you must pass several theory and skills exams. You can begin the licensing process as soon as you turn 18, but you won’t be allowed to transport passengers, carry hazardous materials, or drive across state lines until you turn 21.
Applications can be submitted at any DMV office. They must be accompanied by identification documents, a valid driver’s license, proof of California residency, and payment of licensing fees. To ensure physical fitness for this job, you must also pass a vision test and a medical examination performed by a certified medical examiner. If you plan to engage exclusively in excepted commerce, you are exempt from undergoing a medical examination.
The official general knowledge test is the first theory exam you will take on your journey to becoming a commercial driver. It is based on the official Commercial Driver Handbook (California CDL Handbook 2025), which you should read at least once. A minimum score of 80% is required to pass. If you are interested in driving combination vehicles, you must also pass the official combination vehicles knowledge test. To help you prepare for this exam, we have created a series of practice tests based on Section 6 (Combination Vehicles) of the official Commercial Driver Handbook.
