- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 CA commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for August 2025
To become a commercial driver in California, you must first obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). For a Class A CLP, the licensing process requires you to pass a vision test, provide identification documents, pay the application fee, and achieve a passing score of at least 80% on both the official general knowledge exam and the combination vehicles knowledge test. To operate vehicles equipped with air brakes, you must also pass the official air brakes knowledge exam. To operate in non-excepted commerce, you must also complete a medical exam. Finally, California follows federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulations, requiring all aspiring commercial drivers to complete training from a provider registered in the Training Provider Registry (TPR),
Our California CDL Class A Practice Test is designed to help you master commercial driving theory. There are 94 questions with multiple answer choices. Only one answer is correct, so you should read every question twice and think thoroughly before you make a selection. Unlike the official knowledge test, our practice test is not timed. The answer popularity feature shows how other users have answered each question. This insight allows you to identify questions where misconceptions are common. Please pay attention to the detailed explanations provided for those questions and use them to understand the reasoning behind the correct answers.
The official California Commercial Driver Handbook (California CDL Handbook 2025) describes the various aspects of commercial driving theory in detail. Read this manual multiple times and use it alongside our practice tests to boost your learning potential.
Every question you miss will be saved to your personal Challenge Bank™. This section includes detailed explanations to help you reinforce your understanding of commercial driving theory. Once you answer a question correctly, it will be automatically removed from your Challenge Bank. Visit this section regularly to identify areas that need improvement and learn from your mistakes. Our California CDL Class A Practice Test not only prepares you for the official knowledge exams but also helps you become a safe and responsible commercial driver. Use it whenever your schedule allows and train at your own pace, anytime, anywhere in the world.
