As a commercial driver in California, your shift will begin with a pre-trip inspection of your vehicle. You must take the time to walk around your vehicle and look for anything that could make it unsafe to operate. You will check the tires and all lights and signals, and ensure the mirrors and windshield are clean and undamaged. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandates pre-trip inspections to keep you and other drivers safe. You will find more information about pre-trip inspections in the California Commercial Driver Handbook (California CDL Handbook 2026), an official resource published by the DMV. You should read this manual multiple times during your learning phase, but other tools can help you master commercial driving theory more efficiently.

Our California CDL Class B Practice Test has been designed to closely reflect the content and format of the official general knowledge written exam. This intuitive tool is up to date as of January 2026. You will always practice with the latest version, but you should occasionally check the official CA DMV website for the most up-to-date information. You get unlimited attempts with our practice test, so you can train as often as your schedule allows. A minimum score of 80% is required to pass. However, you shouldn’t let a failed attempt discourage you.
