Colorado requires school bus applicants to demonstrate a series of safety protocols before they are ever allowed to transport a single student. A major step is passing the Colorado DMV CDL School Bus “S” Endorsement Knowledge Test and the required skills test in an actual school bus. Colorado also adds protections beyond federal rules. All new drivers must pass a background check and register through the Colorado Department of Education’s AIM system. Many districts require additional ride-along evaluations or local training before you’re cleared to drive students. You will also need to pass the Passenger “P” Endorsement Test, because transporting students falls under both categories. More information is provided below.
The School Bus Knowledge Test places its strongest emphasis on loading and unloading procedures because the danger zones surrounding the bus remain the highest-risk areas for student injury. Also stressed is the need for constant mirror use, continual scanning, and strict control of student movement and behavior around the bus. You will be expected to recognize and manage blind spots and ensure that children never step into unsafe zones as they approach, enter, or exit. The test also evaluates your understanding of controlled stopping, proper securing of the bus, and procedures to prevent students from becoming caught on handrails or the like.
State law requires that Commercial Learner’s Permits (CLPs) carrying the School Bus (S) or Passenger (P) endorsement include a “No Passengers in CMV Bus” restriction, meaning that all practice must occur in an empty bus until you are fully licensed (with the exception of your instructor or skills test administrator). You will encounter questions about railroad-crossing rules, emergency decision-making, and evacuation procedures. You will also be assessed on your responsibilities during a post-trip walkthrough.
Our Colorado CDL School Bus Knowledge Practice Tests mirror the structure of the official exam. Our experts have removed filler content and focused on the relevant procedures you will likely be tested on. The interactive CDL Manual included is paired with a Challenge Bank that repeats missed questions until mastered. Your results page identifies topics that need more of your attention.
