- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 DE commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for September 2025
In Delaware, anyone can become a commercial driver as long as they meet the basic requirements. You must be 18 to drive within the state (intrastate) and 21 to drive across state lines (interstate), have a valid Delaware driver’s license, and be physically fit for this job. The first step in the licensing process involves submitting identification documents, paying the licensing fees, and passing a vision screening and a medical exam.
To obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), applicants must pass a 50-question general knowledge exam. This test is based on the State of Delaware Commercial Driver License Manual (Delaware CDL Handbook 2025), an official resource published by the DMV.
Initially, your CDL will have an L restriction, which prohibits you from driving trucks equipped with air brakes. To remove this restriction, you must pass the official air brakes knowledge exam and a skills test in a vehicle with air brakes. A minimum score of 80% is required to pass each of these knowledge tests. After obtaining your CLP, you must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a provider listed in FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry.
