Adding the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in District of Columbia immediately boosts your job opportunities and earning potential. There are quite a few detailed steps to obtain this endorsement, but we’ll give you some great help. Our study materials and practice tests are specifically (and scientifically) designed to help you pass the knowledge test requirement on your first attempt!
The federal government has deemed certain cargo as hazardous, including explosives, certain fuels, industrial chemicals, radioactive substances, and infectious materials. The primary goal of the three-part hazmat endorsement process is to ensure safety for you, the public, and the environment. Organizations in sectors like chemical manufacturing, petroleum, and pharmaceuticals actively seek drivers with this credential. In chemical manufacturing, Dow Chemicals has offices in DC. In the medical and pharmaceutical sector, MedStar has multiple health centers requiring hazmat transport. Holding the endorsement makes you far more marketable because it allows you to haul a wider variety of cargo.
Original questions by our teamBased on 2026 DC CDL Handbook
Questions are created and maintained by the Driving-Tests.org content team following our multi-layer editorial process and updated whenever the District of ColumbiaDMV changes its handbook or website information. Official sources we check:
To qualify, you must be at least 21 years old and complete three steps: first, a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) fingerprinting and background check; second, the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for Hazardous Materials Endorsement; and third, the official DMV written exam (after steps one and two are complete!). Don’t delay the fingerprinting as the background check takes time to process (sometimes weeks!), and you can use that waiting period to study.
The District of Columbia HazMat Test requires a passing score of 80% (24 correct answers out of 30). Covered topics include federal regulations, proper handling and packaging of hazardous materials, quantity limits, and transport configurations (District of Columbia CDL Handbook).
Once Transport Security Administration (TSA) clearance is received and you’ve completed the ELDT, you’ll bring the required documents to the DMV, pay the fee, pass the test, and receive your CDL upgrade on the spot. To help you prepare, our online practice tests mimic the official exam structure and content and are strategically designed to eliminate the unnecessary information you’ll find elsewhere. More opportunities, higher pay, and a credential that sets you apart from the competition are all within your reach once you earn the Hazmat endorsement.
