IL CDL Combination Vehicles Practice Test 3 2025

  • Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements

Passing the Illinois CDL Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test is one of several mandatory steps toward earning a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and legally operating combination vehicles in the state. To complete the licensing process, Illinois requires successful Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) through an FMCSA-approved provider. You must also pass the CDL General Knowledge Test to obtain your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), hold that for a minimum of 14 days, and then pass a skills test taken in a representative combination vehicle.

According to the Illinois CDL Manual (Illinois CDL Handbook 2025), the original testing fee for the Illinois Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test covers three attempts. Additional fees apply if you do not pass within those attempts. The test has 20 multiple-choice questions, and you must answer at least 16 correctly (80%) to pass. Topics like safe driving practices for combination vehicles, correct use of air brakes, proper coupling and uncoupling procedures, inspection protocols, and key parts and functions of combination vehicles can be found on the test. If you fail, you must wait at least one business day before retesting. Let’s eliminate failure as an outcome with our expert-prepared series of Combination Vehicle Practice Tests!

Our Free Illinois CDL Combination Practice Tests use proven strategies that enhance retention and significantly improve test performance. The format of our practice tests matches that found in the official exams. Our practice tests also provide instant feedback and hints so that you can learn as you go. Illinois’s major interstate routes like I-55, I-57, I-64, I-70, and I-80 connect Chicago, Springfield, and other major cities across the Midwest. Earning your Class A CDL opens the door to opportunities on these routes in agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, retail distribution, and construction. Some of the state’s top employers hiring combination-certified drivers are Schneider National, Old Dominion Freight Line, NFI Industries, Walmart Distribution Centers, FedEx Freight, and ABF Freight.

To increase your job prospects, consider earning endorsements like Hazardous Materials (H). Endorsements set you apart from other drivers. Additionally, most combination vehicles use air brake systems, so passing the Air Brakes Test is necessary to remove the restriction from your CDL.
