- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 IL commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for August 2025
Welcome to Illinois! Whether you’re hauling cargo across I‑55, I‑80, or I‑57, adding the Doubles/Triples (T) Endorsement to your Illinois Class A CDL opens the door to many potential job opportunities and higher income. The (T) Endorsement gives you the legal authority to operate double and triple trailer combinations, setting you apart from those without it and giving you more flexibility and a competitive edge in the Illinois freight industry.
To obtain the T Endorsement in Illinois, you must pass the Doubles/Triples Knowledge Test, based on Section 7 of the Illinois Commercial Driver’s License Study Guide. The official exam includes 20 multiple-choice questions, and you must answer at least 16 correctly (80%) to pass. If you miss more than four questions, you must retake the test after waiting at least one business day. After three failed attempts, a 30-day waiting period kicks in, with even longer delays after additional failed attempts. Illinois is more punitive than most other states in this case, which is why we created tools to help you pass on your first try.
Our Illinois-specific Double/Triple Trailers (T) Endorsement Practice Tests mimic the format used by the DMV exam. Each practice test comes with real-time feedback, hints to guide you to the right answer, and AI-powered study tools to help with memory retention and test speed. All questions on our Illinois T Endorsement Practice Tests are based on the latest Illinois CDL Manual and cover coupling and uncoupling procedures, how to prevent rollovers and jackknifing, managing the “crack-the-whip” effect, proper braking and following distance, and trailer inspection procedures.
You’ll also need to make sure the “L” or “Z” restriction has been removed from your CDL, since most double and triple trailers use air brakes. To do this, you must pass the Air Brakes Knowledge Test and complete a skills test in an air brake-equipped vehicle. We also offer Illinois Air Brakes Practice Tests to help you clear that restriction.
Once you’ve earned your T Endorsement, consider expanding your qualifications even more. CDL holders can pursue N (Tank Vehicles), H (Hazardous Materials), X (Tank plus Hazmat Combo), P (Passenger Transport), and S (School Bus Operation) endorsements. We offer free Illinois-specific practice tests for each of these to help you pass on your first attempt.
