Ah, the Prairie State! Since you’re visiting this site, you are likely pursuing the steps necessary to obtain your commercial driver’s license (CDL). Perhaps you’ve started reading the state’s official CDL manual and discovered there is quite a bit more to getting this license than you thought. One of the major requirements for obtaining a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) is passing the Illinois DMV General CDL Core Knowledge Test. Unlike the 50-question exams used in many states, Illinois’s exam contains 30 multiple-choice questions, 80% of which must be answered correctly (24 correct answers minimum). That leaves a pretty small margin for error, which only adds more stress to the process. Fortunately, our content experts have put together a series of Illinois DMV CDL General Knowledge Practice Tests with incredible features that help ensure you pass your official exam on the first attempt.

Our interactive CDL Manual and Challenge Bank™ provide real-time explanations for each response that help you learn as you go. After each practice session, you’ll receive a review that highlights any topics needing additional study. The Challenge Bank also recycles any missed questions until you answer them correctly, helping ensure you are fully prepared. Our practice tests follow the same format and similar wording as the official exam, so there will be no major surprises on test day. The official exam tests judgment, not memorization, and our interactive practice tests are designed with this in mind. Once you have a handle on this practice test, visit another from our series: https://driving-tests.org/illinois/il-cdl-practice-test/.

Picture yourself hauling freight along I-55, I-57, I-80, I-90, and I-94 or agriculture across the prairie. You’ll be eligible for jobs throughout Chicago, the Great Lakes, and the Mississippi River region. In short, when you obtain your CDL, you will be a part of the system that keeps the great Land of Lincoln’s economy moving.

While supplementing your CDL manual review with our practice tests, you’ll cover inspections, vehicle control, shifting, communication, visibility, speed, space, hazards, adverse driving conditions, emergencies, and cargo safety. You’ll also need to understand urban traffic, work zones, winter ice, strong winds, railroad crossings, and restricted routes. Furthermore, you must understand how weather, traffic, vehicle weight, and visibility affect speed and stopping distance. All of this is covered in our practice tests.

If you plan to operate an air brake-equipped CMV, you’ll need to pass the Illinois DMV Air Brakes Knowledge Test and behind-the-wheel Skills Test (in an air brake-equipped vehicle). Allow our practice tests to prepare you for that as well: https://driving-tests.org/illinois/il-cdl-air-brake-practice-test/.
