If you are considering driving tankers for a living, it’s important to understand what it takes to begin a career in this field. You’ll need a Class A or Class B CDL (Commercial Driving License) issued by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). You must be at least 18 to apply. To drive interstate or haul hazardous materials, you must be 21. All applicants must hold a valid driver’s license, pass a vision test, and pass several written and skills exams. Those who plan to engage in non-excepted commerce must also pass a medical exam. You must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) before you can schedule and take your CDL skills tests.
Once you have your CDL, you must get a Tank Vehicles (N) endorsement to legally operate commercial vehicles designed to transport liquid or gaseous materials in one or more tanks, with each tank having an individual rated capacity of more than 119 gallons and an aggregate rated capacity of 1,000 gallons or more.
Scoring 80% or higher on the official Tanker Vehicles Knowledge Exam will grant you the N endorsement. This exam includes 20 multiple-choice questions based on Section 8 (Tank Vehicles) of the official Commercial Driver License Manual (Indiana CDL Handbook 2026).
