- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 KS commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for September 2025
The Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement is an incredible addition to your Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). It can immediately expand your job opportunities and potentially boost your income. The endorsement allows you to transport materials the U.S. government has deemed hazardous, and the multi-step endorsement process is designed to protect you, the public, and the environment.
To obtain the HazMat Endorsement, applicants must be at least 21 years old. The Sunshine State requires three main steps to be fulfilled. Step one is to complete all Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements. Step two is to complete a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) fingerprinting and background check. Once TSA clearance has been achieved, the final step is to pass the Kansas DMV HazMat Knowledge Test. This test covers federal regulations, substance handling, material packaging, quantity limits, and transport configurations. It consists of 30 questions, at least 24 (80%) of which must be answered correctly to pass (Kansas (Kansas CDL Handbook 2025).
Why go through this arduous process? Because Kansas industries, from chemical manufacturing (Koch Industries in Wichita) to petroleum, agriculture, medical, and pharmaceutical transport, rely on drivers with this credential. More importantly, employers pay more for the added responsibility and certification, making it a direct path to higher earning potential!
The process might sound overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. We guide you through the steps, and our experts have created the perfect tool for preparing you for the official HazMat Endorsement Knowledge Test. Once ELDT training is complete, submit your TSA background check and fingerprints, the results of which can take weeks. While waiting, prepare with our Kansas-specific Practice Tests. This test is just one of several in our arsenal of Kansas tools. Once you’ve aced this one, visit another here: Kansas CDL HazMat Practice Test. Our practice tests mirror the official exam’s content and format and provide immediate feedback on each response, helping you learn from mistakes as you go (instead of waiting until the end and bombarding you with notes like other sources do).
Once cleared by TSA, when you feel prepared to take the official exam, bring your documents to the Kansas DMV, complete your application, pay the fee, and pass the test!
