The path to becoming a successful commercial driver in Kentucky starts with the licensing process. To obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), you must pass a vision screening, provide identification documents, pay the licensing fees, and score 80% or higher on the official general knowledge test. Unless you plan to be engaged solely in excepted commerce, you must also pass a DOT medical exam. This exam must be performed by an FMCSA-approved medical examiner. The completion of these steps will grant you the Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), which you must hold for at least 14 days. During this time, you can practice driving Class B commercial vehicles under the supervision of a qualified CDL holder with the same class (or higher).
Before you can schedule and take the CDL skills tests, you must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT). All US states meet the same federal training standards, and all aspiring commercial drivers must complete this training. The official Kentucky Commercial Driver License (Kentucky CDL Handbook 2025) will be your primary study resource during your learning phase. This handbook describes the various aspects of commercial driving theory in detail, including pre-trip inspections, safe driving practices, and more information about each endorsement. Please read this manual at least once to familiarize yourself with the basics. When you’re ready, you can use our Kentucky CDL Class B Practice Test to evaluate your knowledge.
