Your career as a commercial driver starts with the licensing process. Once completed, you will be granted a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License), which will allow you to legally operate commercial vehicles on public roads. In Kentucky, the minimum age to apply is 18, although you won’t be allowed to carry passengers, transport hazardous materials, or drive across state lines until you turn 21. Before going to the KSP office to submit your application, you should dedicate several weeks to your learning phase. During this time, the official Commercial Driver’s License Manual (Kentucky CDL Handbook 2026) will be your primary study resource. Please read its contents at least once, and when you’re ready, you can use our practice tests to evaluate your knowledge.
The pre-trip inspection is one of the most important aspects of commercial driving. It is a required safety check performed before operating a commercial vehicle to ensure it is in safe working condition. At the start of each shift, you must confirm that your vehicle has no defects. You should do it the same way each time to make it easier to remember. Section 11 (Vehicle Inspection) of the official Commercial Driver’s License Manual discusses this subject in detail. To support your learning and boost your learning potential, we offer a series of Kentucky CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Practice Tests.
