Maine Driver Audio Handbook

To obtain a permit or license in the Pine Tree State, you’ll need to pass the Maine DMV Written Exam. Passing requires a minimum score of 80%, and the material covered on the exam is substantial. To help speed the learning process and increase overall retention, we have created this Maine DMV Audio Handbook. Our audio handbook gives learners a flexible way to prepare for the official exam without being tied to a printed manual, a desk, or a screen. Because the audio handbook can be played in a browser or downloaded as MP3 files, you can study while riding, walking, exercising, working around the house, or just hitting play during the small moments in your day when that works. For many, hearing the material out loud makes the information easier to absorb. Pair that with our Maine DMV Permit Practice Tests, and you are sure to pass the official exam on your first attempt.

To obtain a learner’s permit, you must be at least 15 years old, and applicants under 18 must complete an approved driver education course. As you listen, you will learn about Maine-specific requirements for moving from a permit to a license. (A person under 21 must hold the learner’s permit for at least six months and complete at least 70 hours of practice driving, including 10 hours at night, before applying for a road test.) You’ll also learn about the Skills Test, which evaluates your control of the vehicle, observation, reaction to other road users and pedestrians, and response to signs, signals, and road conditions. For drivers under 18, Maine also places restrictions on the first license, including driving time limits, limits on carrying passengers outside the immediate family, and prohibitions on using mobile devices while operating a vehicle.

The audio handbook covers Maine’s traffic laws, registration and insurance responsibilities, vehicle inspections, safe vehicle maintenance, vision and hearing, fatigue, driver distractions, aggressive driving, alcohol and drugs, seat belts, and airbags. It also covers keeping children safe, starting, stopping, steering, backing, yielding right-of-way, traffic controls, signs, signals, pavement markings, use of lanes, crosswalks, turning, intersections, roundabouts, expressway driving, passing, school buses, parking, and much more.
