To drive Longer Combination Vehicles (LCVs) in Maryland, you’ll need a Class A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with a Double/Triple Trailers (“T”) endorsement. Before you begin the licensing process, you will spend several weeks studying and mastering general commercial driving theory. This subject is thoroughly discussed in the official Commercial Driver’s License Manual (Maryland CDL Handbook 2026). Because it is easy to miss important details at first, we recommend reading this manual multiple times during your learning phase.
Pay attention to Section 7, which teaches you how to safely pull double and triple trailers. You will learn parking techniques, coupling and uncoupling twin and triple trailers, pre-trip inspections specific to LCVs, and emergency situations. To get a “T” endorsement on your CDL, you must pass the official Double/Triple Trailers Knowledge Exam with a minimum score of 80%. The good news is that you won’t have to take a specialized skill test.
