Massachusetts was one of the first states to introduce eco-friendly incentives for commercial fleets, encouraging companies to adopt cleaner technologies and reduce emissions. As a result, commercial drivers in the state get to operate modern, low-emission trucks equipped with advanced safety features and better fuel efficiency. If you are considering a career in this field, there’s a good chance you’ll be part of a greener future. However, this job involves great responsibility, and only the most determined aspiring commercial drivers succeed in this field.
To get a Class A CDL, you must meet several requirements and pass two knowledge tests. The official general knowledge written exam has 50 multiple-choice questions based on the official Massachusetts Commercial Driver License Manual (Massachusetts CDL Handbook 2026). To pass, you must score 80% or higher and answer all questions before the timer runs out. One key requirement for a Class A CDL is being able to safely operate combination vehicles. You must also pass the official combination vehicles knowledge test if you are interested in this license class. Air brakes are standard on most heavy trucks. To operate commercial vehicles equipped with air brakes, you must pass the official air brakes knowledge exam.
