To become a commercial driver in Massachusetts, you must obtain a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License). This license is granted after passing several theory and skills exams, paying the licensing fees, passing a vision screening, and completing Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT). Aspiring commercial drivers who plan to engage in non-excepted commerce must also pass a medical examination. Your knowledge of general commercial driving theory will be tested through 50 multiple-choice questions on the official General Knowledge Exam. This test will be held at a RMV office and has a time limit. To prepare efficiently and increase your chances of getting a passing score, you should train with our Free Massachusetts CDL Permit Practice Test.
This exam is based on the official Commercial Driver’s License Manual (Massachusetts CDL Handbook 2026), which you should read at least once during your learning phase. A few of those questions are about the pre-trip inspection, a procedure mandated by federal and state laws. You must perform this inspection during your CDL skills tests and at the beginning of your shifts. You can find more information in Section 11 (Vehicle Inspection). Take your time to study this procedure for several days. When you’re ready, you can use our Free Pre-Trip Inspection Practice Tests to evaluate your knowledge.
