Michigan has some unique trucking laws regarding Longer Combination Vehicles (LCVs) and weight distribution. While most states cap gross vehicle weight (GVW) at 80,000 lbs, Michigan allows up to 164,000 lbs for certain configurations. These heavy multi-trailer configurations are often called “Michigan Trains”, and you may drive one yourself with the proper certification.
You’ll need a Class A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with a Double/Triple (“T”) endorsement to legally pull double trailers in the Great Lake State. Some of the highest-paying jobs involve transporting liquid electrolytes used in EV battery production. Combining a “T” with an “X” (Hazmat/Tanker) endorsement is the best choice you can make if you plan to start a trucking career in Detroit, the heart of American car manufacturing.
Since you’re interested in driving LCVs, we’ll help you obtain the “T” endorsement first. This involves a simple and straightforward process. All you need to do is pay the endorsement fee and pass the official Double/Triple Trailers Knowledge Exam. All multiple-choice questions on this test are based on the official Commercial Driver’s License Manual (Michigan CDL Handbook 2026), specifically Section 7 (Doubles and Triples). To help you achieve a passing score on your first attempt, we recommend training with our Michigan CDL Double/Triple Trailers Practice Tests.
