Michigan DOS Driver’s Handbook (AUDIO) 2026

Our Michigan SOS Driver’s Audio Handbook gives learners a highly flexible way to prepare for the Michigan Driver Written Knowledge Exam. Based on Michigan’s official manual, What Every Driver Must Know, this audio handbook allows you to study while riding in a vehicle, walking, exercising, working around the house, or reviewing during quick breaks in the day. For many learners, hearing the material read aloud makes it easier to absorb, especially when paired with our Michigan SOS Permit Practice Tests.

Michigan’s process moves teen drivers through a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system that can begin with Driver Education Segment One at 14 years and 8 months (with parental permission). Teens can apply for a Level One Learner’s License at 14 years and 9 months, and then progress through Level Two and Level Three as requirements are met. The audio handbook helps students and adult first-time drivers understand Michigan’s Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) rules. (If you are 18 or older and have never been licensed, you must apply for a TIP at a SOS office, pass the written knowledge and vision tests, pay the required fee, and practice driving with a licensed adult for at least 30 days before taking the driving skills test.)

As you listen to the audiobook, you will hear about licensing requirements, like proof of Social Security number, legal presence, identity, and Michigan residency, as well as information regarding the test day vision screening. You’ll also cover knowledge test materials, road sign testing, and the steps required before a license is issued. You’ll review driving rules, including distracted driving, seat belt laws, child passenger protection, speed limits, construction zones, emergency vehicles, school buses, right of way, passing, and lane use. Also covered are vehicle turning, roundabouts, railroad crossings, parking, signs, pavement markings, traffic signals, motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, commercial vehicles, bad weather, freeway driving, skids, braking, nighttime driving, crashes, and vehicle-deer collisions. In addition, the audiobook covers "Michigan Lefts," a roadway design that is not as common in other states. Finally, you’ll learn about the state’s point system, probationary licensing program, and "Kelsey’s Law" restrictions on teen cell phone use.

With so much material to learn, our audio handbook and practice tests are the perfect complement to your preparations.
