- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 MN commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for September 2025
One of the smartest ways to expand your driving career is to add a Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). It immediately qualifies you for higher-paying jobs and new opportunities to haul materials that the U.S. government strictly regulates. In the North Star State, hazardous materials include ethanol, ammonia, petroleum products, and a wide range of industrial chemicals. Companies like Cargill, Inc. (Wayzata), 3M (Maplewood), and Flint Hills Resources (Rosemount) depend on drivers with Hazmat credentials and often pay a premium for them.
The endorsement process is not an easy one, which makes obtaining the HazMat endorsement that much more lucrative. One reason for such a lengthy process is the importance of ensuring your safety, as well as the safety of others and the environment. As such, there are three major requirements that must be met. You must 1) complete all Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements and 2) complete a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) fingerprinting and background check. Because results can take weeks, use that time to prepare for the DVS knowledge test, which is the third major hurdle for your endorsement.
The HazMat Knowledge Exam covers federal regulations, handling procedures, packaging, quantity limits, and transport configurations. Passing requires a minimum score of 80%. Minnesota’s test has 30 questions, and you’ll need to get at least 24 correct to succeed (Minnesota CDL Handbook 2025). With three major hurdles, multiple testing topics covered, and strict performance requirements on the official exam, this process can seem quite daunting!
You don’t need to worry, though. Our experts have the perfect tools already in place to significantly simplify this process. Our free practice tests mirror the official exam and provide instant feedback so you can learn as you go. This real-time responsiveness has been scientifically proven to speed the learning process and increase retention. This practice test is just one of several in our set of HazMat tests. Once you’ve tapped into the resources we provide, you’ll likely want to add the other endorsements for which we have preparation materials. Each added endorsement (or removed restriction) adds more versatility to your CDL, pushing you ahead of the pack! We have Air Brakes Practice Tests, Combination Vehicle Practice Tests, and an entire series of Minnesota-focused materials.
Once you complete your ELDT, receive your TSA clearance, and feel ready to take your official exam, bring your documents and fees to the DVS and pass the test!
