To legally drive tractor-trailers and semi-trucks, you must obtain a Class A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License). To qualify, you must be at least 18 and hold a valid Mississippi driver’s license. Unless you plan to engage in excepted commerce, you must pass a medical examination that ensures physical fitness for this job. As you begin your learning phase, the official Commercial Driver’s License Manual (Mississippi CDL Handbook 2025) will be your primary study resource. It discusses general commercial driving theory and its various aspects. We recommend reading this handbook multiple times to learn the basics and build a strong foundation for your driving skills. Even experienced drivers revisit this manual regularly.
Based on the official MS CDL HandbookHandbook‑based (2025) + exam‑taker feedback
You may practice driving combination vehicles with a CLP (Commercial Learner’s Permit) under the supervision of a full Class A CDL holder. A minimum score of 80% on your theory exams will grant you a CLP, which you must hold for at least 14 days. During this waiting period, the DMV requires you to complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a provider listed in FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry (TPR). After completing your training and gaining enough behind-the-wheel experience, you can schedule and take your CDL skills tests, which must be done in a combination vehicle.
For a Class A CDL, you must pass at least two theory exams. The official general knowledge exam will evaluate your understanding of general commercial driving theory. Our Free Mississippi CDL Permit Practice Test includes questions similar to those you will encounter at the DMV location. Train regularly with this intuitive tool to avoid the hassle of failing, waiting one business day, and paying a retest fee.
The official combination vehicles practice test is the second theory exam in the licensing process. It is based on Section 6 (Combination Vehicles) of the official commercial driver’s license manual. Topics include skid prevention, pre-trip inspections specific to combination vehicles, emergency procedures, and coupling and uncoupling procedures. This Mississippi CDL Combination Vehicles Practice Test has everything you need to master this subject.
