It is nearly impossible to back up two trailers more than a few feet without them jackknifing. Even the most expert drivers can usually only keep a set of doubles straight for about 10 to 15 feet. If you jackknife a set, you risk snapping the air lines or bending the drawbar on the converter dolly. Longer Combination Vehicle (LCV) drivers take on jobs in which they don’t have to back up. At the terminal, they drop the rear trailer in a break area, unhook the dolly, then back the lead trailer into a separate dock.
Parking techniques and the safe operation of LCVs are described in the official Commercial Driver’s License Manual (New Jersey CDL Handbook 2026), specifically Section 7 (Doubles and Triples). Please read this section multiple times to familiarize yourself with the basics.

You will receive immediate feedback on each of your answers. Please pay attention to the detailed explanations and note them in a notebook or notebook app for future reference.
Mistakes are valuable learning opportunities during your learning phase. If your answer is incorrect, we will automatically add the missed question to your personal Challenge Bank™. Visit this section at the end of your study sessions to identify areas that need improvement and strengthen your knowledge. Keep practicing until you answer all questions correctly. Remember, your Challenge Bank gets smaller as you get better. Users with Premium can add any question to their Challenge Bank by clicking the bookmark icon in the top-right corner of the page.
