Amazing opportunities await you in the Big Apple once you earn a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL)! This license allows you to legally operate tractor-trailers and other combination vehicles. One of the required steps is passing the Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test. Our experts have designed a series of Combination Vehicles Practice Tests to help ensure you pass the official DMV exam on your first attempt. This isn’t the only requirement you’ll need to fulfill. You must also complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) through an FMCSA-approved provider and successfully pass both the CDL General Knowledge Test and the behind-the-wheel Skills Test. Before taking the Skills Test, you’ll need to hold a Commercial Learner’s Permit for a minimum of 14 days, as required by the New York DMV.
The New York Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test contains 20 multiple-choice questions. In order to pass, you must answer at least 16 correctly (80%). That leaves little room for error. If you fail, you must wait a minimum of one business day before retesting. The initial fee covers up to three attempts, after which new fees apply. With delays and added fees on the line, and a significant need for more state combination drivers, let’s make every second count!
Written in-house by our teamBased on NY CDL Handbook
Questions are created and maintained by the Driving-Tests.org content team following our multi-layer editorial process and updated whenever the New YorkDMV changes its handbook or website information. Official sources we check:
Our Free New York CDL Combination Practice Tests are based on the most recent state CDL Manual and designed to mirror the official exam. The practice tests provide instant feedback to reinforce memory while covering essential topics like safe driving practices for combination vehicles, use of air brakes, coupling and uncoupling procedures, inspection steps, and correcting trailer skids or jackknives. I-87, I-90, I-81, and I-95 are major roadways that extend across the Northeast. Licensed Class A drivers are in constant demand across those roadways in industries like construction, manufacturing, agriculture, and distribution. Major employers include ABF Freight, FedEx Freight, NFI Industries, Old Dominion, UPS, and Walmart Distribution Centers! That’s a lot of opportunity!
You’ll also want to earn additional endorsements such as T (Doubles/Triples), N (Tanker), and H (Hazardous Materials). Check out one of our endorsement practice tests: https://driving-tests.org/new-york/ny-cdl-hazmat-practice-test/. Furthermore, most combination vehicles also rely on air brakes, so taking and passing the Air Brakes Test is essential to remove any air brake-related restriction from your CDL. What we use
Driver handbook • Knowledge‑test/permit overview • Fees & ID requirements • Office/appointment info
How we make exam‑like questions
We mirror recurring themes (e.g., right‑of‑way traps, sign look‑alikes) and use similar distractors and wording styles.
What we don’t do
We don’t collect or publish actual test items and we’re not affiliated with DMV.
