The path to earning your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in North Carolina begins with the licensing process. Aspiring commercial drivers must have a valid driver’s license and be at least 18 years old to qualify. If you plan to cross state lines, haul hazardous materials, or transport passengers, you must be at least 21. To get your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), you must score 80% or higher on the official general knowledge exam. Since most commercial vehicles are equipped with air brakes, you must also pass the air brakes knowledge test to operate them.

The official general knowledge exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions based on the official North Carolina Commercial Driver License Manual (North Carolina CDL Handbook 2026). You should read its contents multiple times during your learning phase to learn the various aspects of commercial driving theory. It takes several weeks to master a new subject, so you should avoid rushing. Remember, your knowledge can only be improved gradually, but the right tools can significantly boost your learning potential.

Our North Carolina CDL Class B Practice Test is an intuitive tool designed to closely reflect the content and format of the official general knowledge exam. Answer all 50 questions at your own pace and customize your testing experience with the features included. Each question has multiple answer choices, but only one is correct. We frequently update this practice test (most recently for January 2026) to reflect the latest updates brought by DMV rules or state law. The official NC DMV website includes the most up-to-date information. We recommend visiting this website regularly, as accuracy is crucial when studying commercial driving theory.
