North Carolina DMV Driver’s Handbook (AUDIO) 2026

The North Carolina DMV Driver’s Audio Handbook is your ticket to passing the North Carolina DMV Permit Knowledge Exam without the headaches and eye fatigue that come with visually studying the massive amount of material needed. You can listen and learn while going about your daily activities or using those small breaks we get throughout the day that might otherwise be wasted. For many Tar Heel State learners, hearing the rules helps the material stick. For visual learners, it provides a second resource for learning. Either way, the audio handbook lets the rules of the road travel with you. Like hot cocoa and marshmallows, it pairs well with our North Carolina DMV Permit Practice Tests (more on that later).

You’ll learn about the licensing process, learner permit rules, test requirements, required documents, REAL ID, proof of insurance, new-resident requirements, license renewal, restrictions, and more. For an original driver license, applicants are tested on vision, traffic signs, knowledge of motor vehicle laws, and driving skills. The knowledge test covers traffic laws and safe driving practices, and audio testing is available upon request for applicants who have difficulty reading.

For drivers ages 15 through 18, the audio handbook explains the state’s graduated driver licensing (GDL) system. In North Carolina, applicants under 18 must maintain school eligibility, and the handbook explains that the DMV must revoke the license of a person under 18 if it receives notice that the person is no longer eligible for a Driving Eligibility Certificate. The handbook also explains the "Lose Control, Lose Your License" rule, which can affect students who receive certain school suspensions or alternative educational assignments. These are state-specific responsibilities that new drivers need to understand before they begin driving.

You will hear about distracted driving, seat belts, child safety seats, air bags, motorcycle helmet laws, transporting children in the back of a pickup truck, weather risk, pedestrians, motorcyclists, school buses, and emergency and law enforcement vehicles. You’ll learn how to share the road with farm equipment and funeral processions, how to manage speed control, curves, turning, following distance, lane changes, passing, backing, parking, single point interchanges, traffic circles, roundabouts, scanning, communicating, hand signals, work zones, night driving, sun glare, rain, hydroplaning, weather conditions, wildlife, brake failure, blowouts, breakdowns, skids, and crashes. Whew!
