As an aspiring commercial driver, your first step is to pass the official North Dakota CDL General Knowledge (permit) test. This exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions based on the official North Dakota commercial driver license manual (North Dakota CDL Handbook 2026). In North Dakota’s western regions, oilfield routes and rural highways often have varying terrain. Drivers who don’t manage speed correctly on hills put themselves and other road users at risk. Controlling speed on downgrades and other aspects of commercial driving theory are explained in the official handbook. Please read its contents at least once to understand the basics.
