If you’ve looked at the list of requirements for CDL holders to be able to transport students in school buses, you are likely overwhelmed by all that is required. The Peace Garden State requires prospective school bus drivers to hold a CDL and obtain the School Bus "S" endorsement along with the Passenger "P" endorsement, as well as pass a Skills Test in a school bus. (Other federal, state, and local requirements may also apply.) The endorsements require passing knowledge examinations with a minimum score of 80%. With such a daunting list of requirements, including official exams that use tricky wording to make sure applicants have a deep conceptual understanding of the material, you’ll need the right tools to ensure you pass. Our North Dakota CDL School Bus "S" Endorsement Knowledge Practice Tests are crafted by content experts who, having eliminated the fluff, present the material you’ll need to pass on your first attempt. Additionally, we have practice tests and materials to help with the rest of your requirements (more on that below!).
Protocols that protect students, especially as they enter or exit the bus, are the key focus of the official exam. According to national statistics, these are the moments when most injuries occur. You’ll need to understand how to position the bus for safe stops, maintain continuous mirror checks, and closely supervise students as they move around the vehicle. You must also count students during loading and unloading and confirm that every child has moved safely away from the bus before you reenter traffic. Students who cross the roadway must move to clear positions in front of the bus, wait for your signal, and cross only after you’ve verified safe traffic conditions.
Other test topics include hazard awareness, controlled stops, emergency procedures, and post-route inspection responsibilities. Our practice tests cover all of this material and mirror the structure and wording of the official exam. An interactive CDL manual is included with our series of practice tests, as well as a state-of-the-art Challenge Bank™ that repeats missed questions until they are mastered. Your results page highlights topics that require additional attention so that you can focus your study where it matters rather than taking a shotgun approach toward learning the material. Because most large school buses are equipped with air brake systems, you should also prepare for the Air Brakes Knowledge Test: https://driving-tests.org/north-dakota/nd-cdl-air-brake-practice-test/.
