From the hilly and forested foothills of the Appalachian in the southeast to the Lake Erie coastline in the north, truck drivers face challenges navigating Ohio. Winter can bring lake-effect snow and slick roads, while the narrow and unpaved roads along the state’s rural infrastructure can bring even more challenges. But make no mistake, the rewards offered in this career and the additional opportunities you can tap into make it worthwhile. You must be interested in adding the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) so you can transport materials the U.S. government has classified hazardous. You’re not getting it for bragging rights, so let’s look at the additional job opportunities and potential increase in pay that unlocks when you obtain this endorsement.
In the Buckeye State, hazardous materials transported include petroleum products, industrial chemicals, agricultural chemicals, explosives, and medical gases (oxygen and other compressed gases used in healthcare and industrial settings). Some prominent organizations in Ohio, such as Marathon Petroleum in Findlay (a major refiner and distributor of fuel products), LyondellBasell and Dow Chemical in Akron (a producer of industrial chemicals), Airgas and Praxair (now part of Linde) in Columbus (a distributor of medical and industrial gases), and Nutrien Ag Solutions and Cargill (a distributor of fertilizers and pesticides across the state) are just a few of the many organizations that rely on Hazmat drivers.
So much opportunity awaits. The process starts with a mandatory fingerprinting and background check conducted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). This check can take weeks to process. While you wait, you’ll want to use the time to study and practice for the second step: the BMV knowledge test. This test covers federal regulations, substance handling, packaging, quantity limits, and transport configurations for hazardous materials. With a score of 80% on Ohio’s 30-question knowledge test, you will pass the test (Ohio CDL Handbook 2025).
To help you with this process, we have designed our Ohio BMV Hazmat Endorsement practice tests to resemble what you will face on the official BMV test and include only the material needed. Receiving immediate feedback on each response, you’ll learn as you go instead of at the end of the session. When you receive your TSA results and feel prepared, you’ll visit the BMV with the necessary documents, pay the fees, and pass the test.
