The state’s roads range from well-maintained highways to rural routes that require caution due to weather-related issues, particularly during the rainy season. Hurricanes often cross this part of the country, resulting in road closures. It is said that the educational system is held in place by school bus drivers, who are responsible for transporting students to and from school. They provide the safest way for children to attend classes, even during hazardous weather.
To drive a school bus in South Carolina, drivers must meet specific requirements. You must have a clean driving record, pass a criminal background check and obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a School Bus (S) endorsement. As you enter the learning phase, there are several exams ahead of you. In South Carolina, you’ll need to pass the CDL School Bus knowledge test as well as a skills test in a school bus (if you haven’t yet done so for your CDL). Additionally, all school bus drivers must pass a drug test prior to the skills test.
A Passenger Vehicles (P) endorsement is also required if the school bus you intend to drive is designed to carry 16 or more occupants (including yourself). Those who haven’t obtained their CDL yet must pass a general knowledge test and a skills test in a commercial vehicle of their choice, which can also be a school bus.
