Are you considering adding the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)? That’s a great idea! This endorsement adds credibility to your CDL and opens the door to higher-paying jobs and many more opportunities. Whether you’re navigating the Black Hills in the west or driving through the rolling hills and open plains of the east, holding a Hazmat endorsement in South Dakota sets you up for a new level of career performance!
The HazMat endorsement authorizes drivers to transport materials the U.S. government has classified as hazardous. These include explosives, certain fuels, industrial chemicals, radioactive materials, and infectious substances. Because of the added risks, there is a multi-level process to earn this endorsement, designed with strict safety measures to protect you, others, and the environment.
For step one, you must ensure you have completed all Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements. Once those are met, you’ll undergo a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) fingerprinting and background check. This is required by federal law, and the results can take several weeks to arrive. During that time, you’ll want to study for the third and final hurdle: the DMV HazMat Knowledge Test. Topics on this exam include federal regulations, handling protocols, packaging, quantity limits, and transport configurations. Of the 30 questions, you’ll need at least an 80% score to pass South Dakota’s test (South Dakota CDL Handbook 2025).
Industries across the Mount Rushmore State that rely on certified Hazmat drivers include agriculture, fuel, explosives, and chemical manufacturing. Within these industries, companies like 3M (Brookings), Terex Utilities (Watertown), Sanford Health (Sioux Falls), and South Dakota Oil and Propane Companies all need drivers with this certification and often offer a premium to get them.
With the daunting amount of material on the official exam and the need for endorsed drivers in South Dakota, we’ve streamlined your process with practice tests that focus directly on tested material and leave out the fluff. Our practice tests also mimic the official DMV test and provide instant feedback so you’ll know exactly why an answer is correct or incorrect. Our South Dakota series contains more than just this HazMat practice test. Check out another here: https://driving-tests.org/south-dakota/sd-cdl-hazmat-practice-test/.
Additionally, we have study materials for other South Dakota endorsements as well as Air Brakes Practice Tests and Combination Vehicle Practice Tests. Check out all that we offer, and open new opportunities and pay potential!
