To legally operate a tanker vehicle, you must obtain a Class A or Class B CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with a Tank Vehicles (N) endorsement. As part of the licensing process, you must pass the official general knowledge exam along with the official tanker vehicles knowledge test before you can get a CLP (Commercial Learner’s Permit) and practice driving tankers.
Both tests are based on the Commercial Driver License Manual (Tennessee CDL Handbook 2026), an official resource published by the DMV. Please read the contents of this manual multiple times during your learning phase, focusing on the sections most relevant to your profession.
Section 8 (Tank Vehicles) describes topics such as liquid surge, proper braking techniques, and emergency procedures. Our Tennessee CDL Tanker Vehicles Practice Tests are designed to strengthen your understanding of these concepts. The practice test that you’re about to take includes several multiple-choice questions, which you can answer at your own pace.
Before you can take the CDL skills tests, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires that you hold a CLP for at least 14 days and complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a registered provider. This training prepares you for real-life situations and makes you a better commercial driver.
