What is a VIN Number?

Every motor vehicle has a unique code known as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), assigned at the time of manufacture. This 17-character code, comprising letters and numbers but excluding Q, I, and O to prevent confusion with 0 and 1, contains detailed information about the vehicle’s maker, model, year, and production location, with no spaces in between. Using Driving-tests.org is the easiest way to use a VIN decoder, it pulls straight from government data, and it's free to use. For Audi vehicles, this includes models like the A4, A3, Q5, and Q7. Each segment of the VIN contains data about the vehicle, such as the make, model, and serial number. This code, located on the chassis or documents, is essential for registration, insurance, and tracking the vehicle's history.

How to Find It

Finding your Audi's VIN is straightforward. Here’s where to look:

  • Passenger Cars: Check the front of the dashboard on the driver's side. View it from outside the vehicle through the windshield. Also, inspect the driver's side door pillar—open the door to find the VIN where the door latches.
  • SUVs: Look in similar locations as passenger cars, focusing on the driver's side door pillar and the front of the dashboard.

How to Check a Specific Number

Enter your Audi's 17-character VIN in the VIN lookup field above to receive an instant report on its manufacturer, brand, make and model, body style, engine size, assembly plant, and model year. The information is provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) from the data submitted by the vehicle manufacturers to NHTSA. The VIN Decoder lookup is intended for use with Audi vehicles manufactured since 1981. Whether you own an A4, A3, Q5, Q7, or any other Audi model, this tool is the best way to get a detailed build sheet or chart specific to your vehicle. If your Audi was made before 1981, the VIN may be a shorter sequence of characters.
