  • How old should I be in order to apply for a learner’s permit in New Mexico?

    You should be at least 15 before applying for your permit.
  • What documents should I have when I go to apply for my license in New Mexico?

    You will need to provide:
    • Proof of Identity
    • Proof of Social Security Number
    • 2 Proofs of Residency
    • If between 18 and 24, you must complete a “None for the Road” DWI class
    • Proof of having completed or of being enrolled in a state-approved driver education program (if under 18)
  • Where do I go to apply for a driver's license in New Mexico?

    Go to a MVD field office or to a MVD “contracted” ‘Driver Education School’.

    You can contact your nearest MVD office at 888 683 4636. Here’s a list of each MVD field office.
  • Who should bring me for my knowledge test in New Mexico?

    If you’re under 18, a parent must come and sign the instruction permit application.
  • Does New Mexico require a physical in order to get a license?

    No physical exam is required.
  • Will I need a vision test when I go for my New Mexico driver's license?

    Yes. You must pass a vision test.
  • Where do I go to get my driver’s license picture taken?

    Your picture will be taken at the MVD office.
  • What’s the next step after I apply for my New Mexico permit?

    You must hold your permit for at least six months. During that time, you must pass a TSB “approved” ‘driver education’ program which includes a 3-hour DWI component. You must also pass a state-approved driver education program and complete 50 hours of supervised driving practice.
