- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 WA commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for August 2025
Anyone who wants to become a commercial driver in Washington State must first meet the requirements for a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). Applicants must be at least 18 to drive within the state and at least 21 to drive across state lines, transport passengers, or transport hazardous materials. To obtain a CLP, you must pass a vision screening, provide identification documents, and pay the necessary fees. Unless you will only be engaged in excepted commerce, you must also take a medical exam.
The official general knowledge exam includes 50 multiple-choice questions to evaluate your understanding of commercial driving theory. These questions are based on the Washington Commercial Driver Guide (Washington CDL Handbook 2025), an official resource published by the DOL. You must score 80% or higher to pass.
To obtain a Class A CDL, you must also pass the official combination vehicles knowledge test. This exam covers key topics such as coupling and uncoupling procedures, pre-trip inspections specific to combination vehicles, and safe driving practices. You must pass this exam to get your CLP and qualify for the CDL skills tests. Since most trucks in the Evergreen State are equipped with air brakes, you must also pass the official air brakes knowledge tests to drive them.
To study commercial driving theory efficiently and ace the official general knowledge test on your first attempt, you should adopt a different approach in your learning phase. Our Washington CDL Class A Practice Test can be used to evaluate your knowledge and identify mistakes so that you can be ready and confident on exam day. It is up to date as of August 2025, so you will always practice with the latest version. Use it regularly throughout your day and stay consistent in your training.
Take the first step today and build the foundation for a strong career. Use our Washington CDL Class A Practice Test alongside the official commercial driver guide to study efficiently and develop the confidence and knowledge to earn your Class A CDL.
