Passing the Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test is a major requirement for earning your Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL). A Class A CDL authorizes you to drive tractor-trailers and other combination vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the towed unit has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 10,000 pounds. This license is quite lucrative in the Badger State, especially given Milwaukee’s dairy and manufacturing routes linking Madison, Green Bay, and La Crosse.
The official Wisconsin DMV test is a multiple-choice exam based on the state CDL Manual. You must correctly answer at least 16 of 20 questions (80%) to pass. If you do not pass, Wisconsin requires you to wait one business day before retesting, and additional testing fees may apply. Those delays and added fees are exactly what we want to avoid as we need you on the road as soon as possible. Because of this, our experts have put together a series of practice tests designed to help you pass your official exam on the first attempt. Your passing score will remain valid for six months, which will give you plenty of time to complete the remaining licensing steps, including your skills test.

Our Free Wisconsin CDL Combination Practice Tests mirror the real exam. The practice tests cover safe driving practices for combination vehicles, preventing trailer skids and jackknifing, coupling and uncoupling procedures, air brake operation, and combination vehicle inspections. Each response is met with instant feedback, a method proven to increase overall retention and speed the learning process. Try another from our series here: https://driving-tests.org/wisconsin/wi-cdl-combination-test/.
Most combination vehicles in Wisconsin use air brakes. To remove the “L” or “Z” restriction from your CDL, you’ll need to pass the Air Brakes Knowledge Test and a skills test in a vehicle equipped with air brakes. Not doing so makes your Class A License virtually useless, so we highly encourage you to check out our Air Brakes Practice Tests and pass the official test: https://driving-tests.org/wisconsin/wi-cdl-air-brake-practice-test/.
You should also consider adding endorsements such as T (Doubles/Triples), N (Tank Vehicle), H (Hazardous Materials), or X (Tank + HazMat Combo) to your CDL. These credentials increase your overall marketability with major Wisconsin carriers like FedEx, Old Dominion, and UPS, and local industries in logistics, dairy, agriculture, and manufacturing. Check out one of our Endorsement Practice Tests here: https://driving-tests.org/wisconsin/wi-cdl-hazmat-practice-test/.
With a Class A CDL in hand, you’ll transport cargo across major Wisconsin roadways like I-90, I-94, I-41, and U.S. 151. Whether you’re hauling cheese from Sheboygan or freight through the Driftless Region, your Wisconsin CDL is a great step to a promising career!
