How to Pass Your Alabama Permit Test in 2018

Getting your Alabama drivers license for the first time can be a little stressful. Where do you go? Who do you talk to? What do you need to take along? Trying to figure everything out on your own can mean that you will spend extra time waiting at the Alabama DMV and that it will take a lot longer to get your Alabama drivers permit. Getting your license to drive in Alabama doesn’t have to be difficult. By following these steps you get your permit and be on the road in just a matter of weeks.

How To Proceed

  1. 1

Determine if You Meet the Alabama Drivers License Requirements

There are certain specific requirements that you must meet in order to get a drivers license or Alabama learners permit. Before you spend any time preparing to get a drivers license, it is a good idea to first check the requirements to be sure that you are qualified. Some of the requirements by the Alabama DOT (Department of Transportation) are that you must be at least 16 years of age, you can’t have a revoked or suspended drivers license in another state, you must be physically and mentally qualified and you cannot be addicted to drugs or alcohol. If you are under the age of 19 you also have to be currently enrolled in school or graduated to take the Alabama drivers permit test.

  2. 2

    Practice for the Permit Test

For new drivers and those with little experience, it is a good idea to practice before taking the Alabama permit test. Even experienced drivers from other states should review the Alabama Driver Manual to ensure that they understand the driving laws specific to Alabama. You can easily get a copy of this manual online or at your local Department of Public Safety. It is a good idea to take an Alabama drivers permit practice test or two before you take your real exam.

  3. 3

Consider Enrolling in an Alabama Driving School

Taking classes from a driving school is a great way to prepare for your permit test and driving test later. These courses are often affordable and are a great way to learn all of the information you will need for your Alabama drivers permit test. These courses will also have you take an Alabama permit practice test which can really help you in your preparation.

  4. 4

    Apply for a Driving Permit

Learning to drive takes practice and there is no better way to practice driving than with an Alabama driving permit. When you are ready to take your permit test, go to an Alabama DMV and apply for a driving permit. For your permit to be issued, you will have to take and pass an Alabama DMV test. To apply for a permit and to qualify for the test, you must take your social security card as well as 2 forms of id (one must include a photo) or 3 forms of id without a photo. Some examples of acceptable identification include your birth certificate, a U.S. passport, an Alabama Identification Card, drivers license or ID from another U.S. state, marriage license or a selective service card. Contact the Alabama Department of Transportation office for specific details. Applicants under 19 also must bring proof of enrollment in school or proof of graduation. Fill out an application and present these items at the DMV to receive a permit test.

  5. 5

Take the Alabama Learners Permit Test

Once you provide the necessary documentation you will be able to take the Alabama permit test. Each time you take the test you must pay $5. This test requires knowledge of basic traffic laws, road signs and safe driving rules. If you have studied your Alabama Drivers Manual and taken a few practice tests, passing this test shouldn’t be a problem.

  6. 6

    Receive Your Alabama Drivers Permit

Once you pass the test you are ready to receive your permit as long as you pay your fees. In addition to the $5 fee for taking the test, you will also need to pay $23.50.

  7. 7

    Practice Your Skills

Now that you have an Alabama driving permit you can drive in Alabama as long as you are with another licensed driver over the age of 26. Make sure that you practice proper driving skills as these will be what you are tested on when it comes time for your skills test.

  8. 8

Make an Appointment for a Skills Test

To take your skills test you must make an appointment. Appointments are scheduled about two weeks in advance by calling your local DMV or by making an appointment online.

  9. 9

    Take Your Skills Test

When it comes time to take your skills test, you will need to provide your own vehicle. This vehicle must be in working order and must meet legal standards including valid insurance. In addition it must have Alabama license plates. If you are 16 a parent must come with you to the test. Since you don’t have your license before passing the test, a licensed driver must bring you to the test. During your test you will be tested on a variety of skills including signaling, parking, safety, stopping and backing up. You can fail the test for failing to adhere to do these properly as well as if you do anything dangerous, illegal or if you have an accident. If you fail your test, you can try again in a few weeks after you have more practice.

  10. q

    Enjoy Your New License

If you pass your driving test, you are ready to receive an Alabama drivers license. It might take a few weeks for your new license to arrive in the mail, but you will be able to drive alone using a print out which will be provided by the DMV. Make sure that you continue to follow all the laws and safety regulations to ensure that your license isn’t revoked or suspended and that you don’t receive any traffic tickets.
