How to Get Your HazMat Endorsement

Real talk: it takes 30-60 days. The TSA background check is the bottleneck, so start there.

1

Apply for TSA Background Check

Visit a TSA enrollment center for fingerprinting. This is required because HazMat transport is a security-sensitive area.

2-6 weeks $85.25 (or $41 if you already have a TWIC card for maritime work)
2

Complete ELDT Training

First-time applicants must complete Entry-Level Driver Training from an FMCSA-registered provider. Do this while waiting for TSA clearance.

1-2 days $25-$400
3

Pass the Written Test

Take the 30-question HazMat knowledge test at your DMV. You need 80% (24 correct) to pass. Use our practice tests to prepare.

Same day $5-$30 (varies by state)
4

Get Your CDL Updated

After passing, your CDL is updated with the "H" endorsement. You're now authorized to transport hazardous materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is HazMat?

HazMat (Hazardous Materials) are products that pose a risk to health, safety, or property during transportation. Examples include explosives, flammable liquids, gases, radioactive materials, and corrosives. Federal and state regulations strictly control how these materials can be transported by road.

What is a HazMat endorsement?

A HazMat endorsement is an additional qualification added to your CDL that authorizes you to transport hazardous materials in a placarded vehicle. It's represented by the letter "H" on your license (or "X" if combined with Tanker).

Why should I get a HazMat endorsement?

Higher pay: HazMat drivers earn nearly $11,000 more per year compared to non-HazMat drivers. Job security: Demand for HazMat drivers is growing faster than average. More opportunities: Many trucking companies specifically seek drivers with HazMat certification.

What topics are covered on the HazMat test?

The test covers: hazard classification, shipping papers and marking, placarding rules, loading/unloading procedures, bulk tank requirements, emergency response, and security plans. Our practice test covers all these topics.

How many questions are on the HazMat test?

30 questions, multiple choice. You need 24 right to pass (80%). Most states don't have a time limit.

What does it cost to get a HazMat endorsement?

TSA background check fee is $85.25 (or $41 if you already have a TWIC card from maritime work). State DMV fees are $5-$30. First-timers need ELDT training ($25-$400). Total: $100-$500 depending on your state.

How long does the process take?

30-60 days typically. The TSA background check is the bottleneck (2-6 weeks). Once cleared, you can test and get your license updated the same day.

Can I get a HazMat endorsement with a felony?

It depends on the type and timing. TSA has permanent disqualifiers (terrorism, treason) and interim disqualifiers (most serious crimes, 7-year ban). Check TSA's full list.

Do I need ELDT training for HazMat?

Yes, for first-time applicants (since February 2022). Complete ELDT HazMat theory before the knowledge test. Renewals usually don't need it again.

How long is the HazMat endorsement valid?

5 years, but it expires when your CDL expires. Renewal requires a new TSA background check and fingerprinting.
