DC CDL School Bus Practice Test 2 2026

Original questions by our team Based on 2026 DC CDL Handbook
5 min

The District of Columbia makes student safety a priority every school day. For this reason, federal and state law requires every applicant to pass the District of Columbia DMV CDL School Bus “S” Endorsement Knowledge Test and a skills test conducted in a school bus. The District of Columbia requires a background check, and new drivers may be required to undergo additional evaluations depending on district policies. This article focuses on the knowledge test requirements; however, applicants must also pass the Passenger “P” Endorsement Knowledge Test before transporting any students. Commercial Learner’s Permits (CLPs) bear a restriction that prevents the operation of buses with passengers.

The official District of Columbia School Bus “S” Knowledge Test evaluates an applicant’s understanding and management of risk. For example, most student injuries occur in what are referred to as danger zones (the areas extending up to thirty feet in front of the bus and twelve feet to the sides and rear). Additionally, the test focuses on loading and unloading procedures, the safe movement of children around the bus, and the constant use of mirrors to eliminate blind spots.

About the District of Columbia CDL

Applicants are also expected to understand how to 1) achieve controlled stops, 2) secure the bus before and after loading, and 3) monitor students as they approach, enter, and exit the vehicle. Drivers must monitor students as they enter and exit the bus, paying careful attention to ensure that students’ clothes and bags aren’t caught on handrails. Additionally, it is vital that drivers understand proper mirror use to manage blind spots. There are also specific procedures to follow at rail crossings and in traffic, and drivers must understand the proper procedures for emergency evacuation decisions, student management, and mandatory post-trip inspection. A lot of material is covered on the official exam, and our series of District of Columbia CDL School Bus “S” Practice Tests is the perfect tool to help ensure you pass on your first attempt.

Our practice tests replicate the structure of the official exam. They also feature an interactive CDL Manual, AI-driven immediate feedback so you can learn as you go, and a Challenge Bank that resurfaces missed questions until mastery is achieved. The results page provided at the conclusion of your practice tests highlights specific topics for improvement. Once you have aced this practice test, try another here: https://driving-tests.org/district-columbia/dc-cdl-school-bus-practice-test/.

Since most large school buses use air brakes, applicants should also prepare for the Air Brakes Knowledge Test. The Passenger “P” Endorsement is required as well.
