Driving combination vehicles such as tractor-trailers on Idaho highways requires passing the Idaho Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test. By no means is this the only requirement. There are several steps for obtaining the necessary Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). You’ve come to the right place to prepare for that part of the process!
You’ll need to complete all Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) through an FMCSA-approved provider listed on the Training Provider Registry (TPR). Then you’ll need to pass the CDL General Knowledge Test to obtain your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), and hold that permit for a minimum of 14 days before taking the behind-the-wheel skills test. That’s quite a list of steps, but don’t worry! Our practice tests will guide you along the way.
The Idaho Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test contains 20 multiple-choice questions, and you must correctly answer at least 16 (80%) to pass. Idaho DMV rules require you to wait at least one business day and pay a retesting fee per attempt if you fail. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen!
Our Free Idaho CDL Combination Practice Test is the perfect tool for passing the official test! It mirrors the official test format and is based on the latest Idaho Commercial Driver’s License Manual (Idaho CDL Handbook 2025). Each practice question includes instant feedback to speed learning. Study topics include safe driving practices for tractor-trailers, preventing trailer skids and jackknives, air brake systems for combination vehicles, proper coupling and uncoupling procedures, and inspection requirements – all the topics needed for the official exam! Once you’ve mastered this practice test, check out another one here: https://driving-tests.org/idaho/id-cdl-combination-test/.
Obtaining the Class A license expands your employment opportunities in industries including agriculture and livestock hauling, timber and forestry transport, construction and heavy equipment logistics, and long-haul freight. Major Idaho employers hiring Class A drivers include Swift Transportation, Lamb Weston, Challenger Pallet & Supply, and FedEx Freight. These are just drops in the bucket when compared to the state-wide list of opportunities!
You’ll also need to pass the CDL Air Brakes Test to drive combination vehicles, as the vast majority of them are air brake-equipped. Without passing that test, your CDL will carry an air-brake restriction (making the Class A virtually worthless). Be sure to check out our series of Air Brakes Practice Tests here: https://driving-tests.org/idaho/id-cdl-air-brake-practice-test/.
With our Idaho practice tests, you’ll be well-prepared to pass every exam and begin your career driving combination vehicles across the Gem State.
